At the end of the 19th century, the Austro-Hungarian Empire took over governance, and in record time they transformed Sarajevo into a modern European metropolis. The architecture shifted from Oriental bazaars to grand Viennese facades.  
But it was also here that world history took a fatal turn. At the iconic Latin Bridge in 1914, Gavrilo Princip fired the shots that killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand and ignited World War I. A moment that forever placed Sarajevo on the world map.

From Olympic pride to siege and rebirth (1918 – today)

From grandeur to war and rebirth, Sarajevo today stands as a symbol of strength and hope. The 20th century saw the city experience both its greatest heights and deepest lows, particularly in 1984 when the world gathered for the Winter Olympic Games. Here, the city shone with sporting pride and Yugoslavian hospitality, cementing its status as a global meeting place for culture and peace. This optimism, however, was brutally interrupted in the 1990s by the longest siege in modern history, which left deep scars on the city's soul and architecture. 
Today, Sarajevo has undergone an impressive rebirth and is once again flourishing as a cultural hub in the Balkans. The city merges its complex history with a modern energy, where Ottoman traditions and Austro-Hungarian elegance meet a vibrant urban life with international film festivals and a unique coffee culture.
